Interview as discovery call.

Top reps don't pitch in their first call - they ask sharp questions and let the customer reveal what they actually need. Then the pitch becomes irresistible. Treat your interviews the same way and you'll outclass 90% of candidates.

Flip the dynamic - they're selling, too

Most candidates show up to interviews to "be evaluated." That posture loses. You're evaluating them - for whether this is the right next role of your career. That's the energy.

The best discovery makes the customer realize, mid-call, that they need exactly what you sell. Same here. Sharp questions help them realize you're the obvious hire.

Don't show up to be evaluated. Show up to evaluate. The job becomes yours when you decide whether you want it.

12 power questions

Don't ask all 12. Pick 4–6 that fit the conversation. Save the rest for follow-up rounds.

About the role (signal: clarity, real expectations)

  • "What does success look like in this role at 30, 60, and 90 days?"
  • "What's the biggest challenge the person in this role will face in their first six months?"
  • "How is performance measured here - what's the actual scorecard?"

About the team (signal: dynamics, baggage)

  • "How is this team structured today, and how do you see it evolving?"
  • "What's the team's superpower - and where does it struggle?"
  • "Why is this role open right now? Was this person promoted, did they leave, or is this a new role?"

About leadership & culture (signal: real culture, not the website)

  • "How are decisions made here - top-down, bottoms-up, or something in between?"
  • "What's something the company does differently that surprises new hires?"
  • "Where do you think the company will be in 18 months - and what has to be true for that?"

About the business (signal: real strategy, not deck-talk)

  • "What's the biggest threat to the business right now?"
  • "How does the team I'm joining contribute to the company's most important goal this year?"
  • "What kept the last person who held this role up at night?" (Subtle, lethal.)
