What is an AI job search agent?
An AI job search agent is software that works your job search between the times you sit down to do it: it watches job boards against the job you want, decides which new roles fit and why, and gets the next step ready, such as a tailored resume or a follow-up, for you to approve.

How an agent differs from what you already use
- A job tracker
- keeps the record you type into it. It never goes looking for roles, and it only knows what you tell it.
- Job alerts
- send every posting that matches a keyword. They do not judge fit, so most of what arrives is noise.
- An auto-apply bot
- submits applications in your name, at volume, often without you reading the posting or the resume that went out.
- ChatGPT and other assistants
- help with any one task when you ask, but do nothing on their own and keep no record of your search between chats.
- An agent
- does the watching and the first pass on its own, explains what it found, and waits for you on anything that goes to another person.
What a good agent does
- Finds new roles on its own, on a schedule, against a written description of the job you want.
- Explains why each role fits and what is missing, so you can decide in a minute.
- Tailors your resume from your real experience and shows every change.
- Notices when a role goes quiet and drafts the follow-up.
- Keeps the record of every role, person and date current without you typing it in.
What to check before you give one your inbox
Most of the useful work, tracking replies and noticing when a company goes quiet, needs access to your job email. Five questions worth asking any agent first:
- What does it read? An agent that sorts job email needs permission to read your inbox. Ask what it does with the rest.
- Does it send anything without you? Look for a plain promise that nothing goes to an employer or a recruiter until you press send.
- Does it apply in your name? Some agents do. If you would rather choose each application, pick one that never submits.
- What goes to an AI model? Reading postings and email usually means sending some text to a model provider. A good agent says which.
- Can you leave? You should be able to disconnect your inbox and delete everything, in one place, any time.
For Shep, the answers are on the Trust page: what it reads, what it keeps, what leaves Role Trackr, and how to delete everything.
Where agents get their jobs
The best source is the company's own job board, the page its recruiters manage, because that is the real posting with the real link to apply. Most tech companies run theirs on a handful of systems: Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby, Workable and Workday. Agents differ in which of these they read, and whether they also read LinkedIn and Indeed.
Shep reads Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby and Workable boards at 2,000+ tech companies every night. It does not read LinkedIn, Indeed or Workday yet, so if your field hires mostly there, an agent that does will see more. You can see exactly what Shep reads on the free job board and in the open dataset.

Questions people ask
Is an AI job search agent the same as auto-apply?
No. Auto-apply submits applications for you. An agent can do the finding and the preparing without ever submitting; some agents also apply, and that is the first thing worth checking.
Do AI job search agents work?
They save the hours spent refreshing boards and rewriting resumes, and they make follow-ups happen. They work best when you give them a clear description of the job you want, and when the boards they read are where your field hires.
Are AI job search agents free?
Several have a free plan or a free trial. Role Trackr is free to start, with Pro at $10 a month; others run from free to about $40 a month.
Will recruiters know I used an agent?
They see what you send. An agent that writes from your own facts, shows every change and waits for your approval leaves you in charge of every word.
